Scientists Turned Spinach Leaf Into Human Heart Tissue That Beats!

Researchers at Worcestor Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, MA , USA used spinach leaves to build functioning human heart tissue, complete with veins that can transport blood.

Blood vessels transport the oxygen and nutrients that a lab-grown tissue sample needs to grow and function, It’s difficult to build a working network of fine blood vessels

“I had done decellularisation work on human hearts before, and when I looked at the spinach leaf its stem reminded me of an aorta,” says lead researcher Joshua Gershlak.

Time will tell which of these approaches will prove the most practical outside the lab, but it’s definitely an exciting space to watch.
